Dr. Hossein Azadi is a senior researcher at Centre for Environmental Sciences (UHasselt) and Economics and Rural Development, Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech (ULg). He is also a scientific staff at the Department of Geography (UGent). Formerly, he was a visiting researcher at CIBNOR (La Paz) in Mexico. Recently, and as a Fulbright fellow, he is visiting Fernand Braudel Center at the State University of New York at Binghamton to conduct a study on land governance.

Hossein holds a PhD in “sustainable rangeland management” using fuzzy modeling. He is familiar with decision support systems and spatial modeling in socio-economic aspects of environmental impact assessment. As a guest lecturer at Mekelle University (Ethiopia), he also teaches "mixed-method" approach including quantitative and qualitative techniques) and “land governance”.

Earlier, as a post-doc fellow, he conducted two projects on “Global Land Grabbing for Food and Biofuels” at Groningen and Leiden universities, the Netherlands. Later, he conducted his third post-doc at SEG on “Monitoring Agricultural Land Conversion Induced by Urban Sprawl and Transportation in Northeast Iran”.

Hossein has broadly been involved in agri-rural and development studies including 40 national and 7 international projects among which he steered 19 projects. Furthermore, he has published over 140 papers amongst a series of high impact factor journals.

He was also the coordinator of the Middle East Networks in the Centre for Development Studies at Groningen University. Since 2010, Hossein is elected as the counsellor of the Iranian Scientific Society of Agroecology. He is also a member of editorial board in several journals. Additionally, he is a research grant evaluator for the National Center of Science and Technology Evaluation in Kazakhstan and a member of the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), USAID Land Tenure and Property Rights Portal, Land Deal Politics Initiative (LDPI) and Land Portal. Furthermore, he has frequently been consulted by various Iranian agri-rural institutes and was lately interviewed by SciDev.Net.

Holding this background, thematically, Hossein has focused on “development studies” including environment and development, sustainability, agroecology, agrarian change, land governance, and methodologically, he mainly applies “mixed-method” including econometrics, multi criteria decision making, fuzzy modeling, and qualitative techniques.
